Building Minds, Minding Buildings [PDF]
Abstract: Rodent and roach infestation, mice droppings, mold that has caused mushrooms to grow, asbestos, extreme heat or cold in classrooms, severe overcrowding, and nonfunctional bathrooms are just some examples of the appalling physical conditions found in thousands of our nation's public schools, a American Federation of Teachers (AFT) report revealed. These conditions are adversely affecting millions of students and school staff -- and potentially every student and school employee who walks through the doors of our public schools. The research is unequivocal: Poor building conditions are a serious threat to the health and academic performance of students. Achievement is significantly lower in schools with poor conditions, studies show. Likewise, asthma induced by mold and other indoor air quality problems is an increasingly prevalent school health issue and a major contributor to student and staff absenteeism. Things don't have to be this way. Schools can be modernized or built from scratch using proven, cost-effective and environmentally sound solutions. Many schools already are meeting these high standards, serving as models to others. The AFT believes that healthy, well-maintained schools that are conducive to learning cannot be reserved for select communities; they must be part of the academic agenda for every American student. Green Seal Environmental Standard for Cleaning Services (GS-42) [PDF]
Abstract: This Standard establishes requirements for cleaning service providers, including in-house and external cleaning services, to create a green cleaning program that protects human health and the environment. For the purposes of this Standard, green cleaning encompasses all indoor activities typically required to clean commercial, public, and industrial buildings. Maintenance of exterior areas such as parking lots, grounds, or picnic areas is excluded from the Standard, with the exception of areas directly outside building entryways. Green Seal Environmental Standards
Abstract: Green Seal bases its work on thorough, state-of-the-art scientific evaluations using internationally accepted methodologies. Product evaluations are conducted using a life-cycle approach to ensure that all significant environmental impacts of a product are considered, from raw materials extraction through manufacturing to use and disposal. Wherever possible, Green Seal standards cite international test methods for evaluating product performance or environmental attributes such as toxicity, and its procedures conform to international standards for ecolabelling. In developing environmental standards and certifying products, Green Seal follows the Guiding Principles and Procedures for Type I Environmental Labeling adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14024). Green Seal has played an important role in helping to shape policy at the national and international levels in the practice and use of ecolabeling and environmental product standards. We were instrumental in the development of ecolabelling policy standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under the ISO 14000 environmental management series. Lessons in Efficiency
Abstract: Anyone who is in contact with children--be they a teacher or a parent--knows one of the most successful ways to create social change is to start with the youth. Of the many efforts conducted throughout the US to create "greener" schools, water efficiency is one of the pivotal factors. Three of the 10 largest school districts are in Florida, which has been under water conservation measures for months. The fifth-largest school district is in Clark County, NV, another focus of water use concerns. Throughout the US, many governmental water agencies are partnering with local school districts in identifying and addressing water waste issues. Quantifying Sustainability: A Study of Three Sustainable Building Rating Systems and the AIA Position Statement [PDF]
Abstract: This study of three green building rating systems (Green Globes, SBTool 07, and LEED NC 2.2) assesses their effectiveness in supporting the goals of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) sustainability position statement. A.E. Stevenson High School
Abstract: A.E. Stevenson High School has been ranked as the top-ranked public high school in Illinois by Newsweek Magazine. To accommodate a projected enrollment of 4,500, the facility was expanded in September 2001 to include a new resource center, commons and a 30-classroom addition. The design called for spaces to encourage collaborative learning and expansive windows in the resource center that allow natural light creating a sense of comfort and stimulation for learning and social activities.

Cherry Lane High Case Study: Restructuring a Large, Comprehensive High School to Small Schools [PDF]
Abstract: Cherry Lane has begun a multi-year effort to convert from a large, comprehensive high school into three small schools with unique identities. This case study of Cherry Lane High's first year of conversion looks at the background, design year, and early implementation of the multi-year process to becoming three small schools. By highlighting the impact on the school community and the major challenges they face, it is intended to inform the work of other districts and schools. The CCE research team presented this study at the American Educational Research Association annual conference in April 2003 in Chicago.

Clackamas High School
Abstract: The North Clackamas School District established two basic goals for the design of the new high school: to create a facility that would meet the educational needs of students and to do so within a modest budget. The creation of a high-performance, green building was not considered a primary aim. However, energy efficiency, high-quality indoor environments, environmental responsibility, and resource efficiency became integral to meeting the school district's established goals.

Abstract: The Minnesota Sustainable Design Guide educates and assists architects, building owners, occupants, educators, students, and the general public concerning sustainable building design. The Guide is a design tool that can be used to overlay environmental issues on the design, construction, and operation of both new and renovated facilities. NY-CHPS High Performance Schools Guidelines
Abstract: The State Education Department (SED) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) created these guidelines, known as the "Collaborative for High Performance Schools" (NY-CHPS), to encourage the use of energy efficient design when building and renovating schools. NY-CHPS will help schools develop and maintain learning environments that contribute to improved academic achievement while reducing operating costs and protecting and conserving our natural resources. Schools built according to the NY-CHPS guidelines are durable, easy to maintain, healthy, energy efficient, and comfortable. These improvements contribute to a better learning environment that has been shown to contribute to reduced absenteeism and better teacher and staff retention. Main sections of the guidelines cover the school site, water, energy, materials, indoor air quality, O&M, and "extra credit" considerations. SED and NYSERDA established an Advisory Council to help guide the creation of the NY-CHPS guidelines. That Advisory Council consisted of members of the following groups: the Council of School Superintendents, the Association of School Business Officials, the Association of Educational Safety and Health Professionals, the Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds Association, the New York State Department of Health, the Healthy Schools Network, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the Association of Energy Engineers, and the American Institute of Architects. A consortium of more than 20 cities, counties, non-profits, state and federal agencies, and utilities has produced the first phase of this Playbook to help promote the goals set out in the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. EPA Indoor Air Quality Tools For Schools
Abstract: Twenty percent of the U.S. population spends their days in elementary and secondary schools. And while most parents and teachers would probably accuse schools of being germ factories, that persistent cough and sniffles may not be the result of the latest bug going around. Studies show that half of our nation's 115,000 schools have problems linked to air quality. To help combat indoor air quality problems, EPA has created the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tools for Schools Kit. Printed materials included in the kit are available for download from this web site in html or pdf format. Ordering information for the video portion of the kit is included.

Final Specification for High-Efficiency Lavatory (Bathroom Sink) Faucets
Abstract: EPA released a final specification on October 1, 2007, for high-efficiency bathroom sink faucets and faucet accessories (e.g., aerators). Manufacturers that produce faucets and aerators meeting WaterSense efficiency and performance criteria can apply to have their products certified and earn the WaterSense label. Before submitting products for testing, manufacturers must have a partnership agreement with EPA in place. In order to earn the WaterSense label, faucets must be independently tested and certified by a licensed certifying body to meet EPA's water-efficiency and performance criteria. To meet the criteria, faucets and accessories such as aerators cannot flow at a rate of more than 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm), or less than 0.8 gpm. Working with stakeholders, EPA chose a rate that ensures both water savings and that the faucet flow rate will continue to meet the needs of the user. WaterSense labeled faucets not only save water, but the have the added benefit of saving energy used to treat, pump, and heat water. This web site includes information for manufacturers hoping to become WaterSense partners and the product and program specifications.

Abstract: The aims of the Partnership are to provide recognition and, if requested, technical assistance to organizations that are working to implement environmentally preferable operations and maintenance practices. The Green Facilities Partnership is not a standard-based certification program; rather, the partnership provides recognition based on implementation of an action plan that is specific to each partner organization's particular challenges and opportunities. The Green Facilities Partnership is intended to complement established green building certification programs, in particular the US Green Building Council's LEED rating systems. Abstract: The Green Cleaning Pollution Prevention Calculator quantifies the projected environmental benefits of purchasing and using "green" janitorial services and products. It is designed to forecast the environmental benefits of reducing chemical use by doing some or all pollution prevention measures typically involved in the routine interior cleaning of an office building. This tool also enables users to identify which green cleaning measures will have the greatest impact in reducing their use of hazardous chemicals and in preventing pollution. The Calculator's output applies only to standard office cleaning products and practices, and does not apply to other building maintenance issues, such as equipment maintenance, pest control, or landscaping activities.

Healthy Schools: Lessons for a Clean Educational Environment [PDF]
Abstract: More than 53 million children and 6 million adults in the United States spend their days in our elementary and secondary schools. Reducing environmental risks inside these buildings is critical to maintaining the public health. Almost all of New England's children will spend a large portion of their childhood in school. To help our children stay healthy, we must reduce their exposure to environmental hazards in school environments. When students and their teachers are healthy and comfortable, children learn and produce more in the classroom, which in turn improves performance and achievement later in life. This brochure can help school employees and parents recognize potential environmental health issues at schools, both indoors and outdoors. It includes basic information about a broad range of topics, and links to web sites that offer more information and guidance on how to have a healthier school environment and comply with relevant laws. EPA's Healthy School Environments web site provides access to programs that help prevent and resolve environmental issues in schools.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative
Abstract: On Oct. 6, 2007, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), The University of Texas at Austin's Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the U.S. Botanic Garden announced the development of a new rating system for sustainable landscape design, called the Sustainable Sites Initiative. Just as the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® rating system measures a building's environmental impact, the Sites Initiative will measure the sustainability of designed landscapes of all types, including public, commercial and residential projects. The U.S. Green Building Council is lending its support to this project and plans to adopt the Sustainable Sites metrics into its LEED® system once they are finished. The Sustainable Sites Initiative web site provides the rationale for the project, an overview of the scope, products and review process, tips, project history, information on partners, and links to draft reports when they become available.

Abstract: The Healthy School Environments Web pages are intended to serve as a gateway to on-line resources to help facility managers, school administrators, architects, design engineers, school nurses, parents, teachers and staff address environmental health issues in schools.
