Because of the high level of technical and resource commitments required by many hazard assessment tools, a simpler alternative called the Quick Chemical Assessment Tool (QCAT) has been developed by the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology). The primary goal of the QCAT is to assign an appropriate grade to a chemical using:
- A refined group of high priority hazard endpoints identified in the EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) Program
- Fewer data sources
QCAT was written enable small and medium sized businesses with limited resources and technical expertise to conduct a basic hazard assessment. QCAT provides an introduction to the hazard assessment process and allows the identification of those chemicals with the highest level of concern. For those companies new to the hazard assessment process, the QCAT provides a good starting point.
