Tennessee Green Star Partnership Highlight – Exedy America Corporation

TGSP-3-star-final-logo-jpgGreen Star Partnership (TGSP) is an environmental leadership program facilitated by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The partnership recognizes Tennessee industries that are committed to sustainability and that exhibit continuous improvement throughout their entire operation. Sharing successes, networking, and best management practices are just a few of the opportunities TGSP offers its members.

Benefits of membership in the TGSP include recognizing and sharing success in sustainability. The TGSP develops partner highlights as one of the many ways sustainability in action is shared through its members.

This month’s (March 2017) partner highlight is Exedy America Corporation of Mascot, Tennessee. Exedy America is a manufacturer of drivetrain components and related systems, including torque converters and manual clutches for the automotive industry. The company has been producing high quality torque converters and clutch systems since 1996. A focus on the basics is the philosophy that has maintained Exedy America’s success.

“The basics of sustainability are, of course, to not create waste in the first place,” said Ellen Jenny, Exedy America’s assistant manager for Environment, Health and Safety. “Minimize the waste you do generate, then reuse or recycle what’s left.”

Exedy America recycles between 2 and 5 tons per month of staple recyclables such as cardboard, office paper and metals from the production floor, but Jenny felt the company could do more. Exedy America uses a great deal of large and mid-sized totes and drums as well as wood pallets. It’s difficult to repurpose those items, but Exedy America looks for the most beneficial outlets by which to do so. It uses local partners to provide a market for material discards. Many used totes and drums are slightly damaged and can be refurbished, and put back into use by Exedy America’s vendors or even within the plant.
